Serving Children, Adolecents and Adults

Children First is a nonprofit counseling agency serving Grand Prairie and surrounding areas. Counseling services are available for persons age three through adulthood provided by licensed, masters degreed professionals. Children First has three programs: General Counseling, Adolescent Services, and Batterer Intervention and Prevention (BIPP). See “Services” for more information. We have several sources of funding including government grants, insurance, donations, client fees, contributions and United Way. Most of those we serve are eligible for one of our funding sources and pay little or nothing for services. The BIPP Program does assess fees for its program. Children First’s office hours are 8:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. However, evenings and Saturdays are available by appointment.

Mission

Children First Inc. is dedicated to providing for the mental health needs of children, adolescents and adults through education and counseling with emphasis on the prevention of and recovery from abuse, neglect, and victimization.

History

Children First Counseling Center was organized as Family Outreach in 1977 in response to a deep concern from the community and it’s leaders that children were not being treated for child abuse. Family Outreach was primarily a volunteer organization that performed case management for abused children referred from the Texas Department of Protective and Regulatory Services, Child Protective Services (CPS). From 1981 through 1985, Family Outreach received funding from CPS.

In 1985, Family Outreach changed its name to Children First, Inc., d.b.a. Children First Counseling Center. In 1988 Children First became a United Way affiliate agency. Over the years, Children First has expanded it’s services to include individual and group counseling, family and couples counseling, play therapy, anger management, psycho-educational groups for adolescents, and curriculum based groups for batterers.
