April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month

Even before its official declaration, Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) was about both awareness and prevention.

Openly advocating for positive social norms and policies that promote equity and safety is the most effective way to erase the silence and shame that keeps sexual violence hidden.

You do not have to work in the field of prevention to make a difference. Together we can all help prevent dangers related to assault, harassment, and abuse before they even begin.

WHAT CAN I DO TO HELP?

  • Model and promote healthy relationships that are based on respect, safety, and equality.
  • Encourage children you provide care for to respect others’ boundaries and bodies.
  • Challenge jokes that demean others, confront unfair gender stereotypes, and encourage treating others with respect.
  • Improve your skills around asking for consent and respecting the answer, then share your knowledge with friends, family, or other social circles.
  • Improve policies and practices within your faith-based groups, community organizations, workplaces, and schools to ensure everyone is treated fairly.
  • Properly screen your staff and volunteers, and provide them with frequent training on healthy behavior and boundaries.
  • Participate in the April Social Media Challenge **see instructions below**
