Are You Content?

Contentment sometimes gets a bad reputation because people don’t understand what the word really means. Contentment is a state of happiness and satisfaction. Even though contentment might sound boring, contentment can be extremely liberating and satisfying. It is easy to feel discontent with your life if you are constantly comparing yourself to what you see on social media. We normally follow accounts with pretty things, amazing lifestyles, or what we deem as the perfect family, house, body, car, etc. However, the sad truth is that more stuff does not equal more happiness. Once the newness of things wears off, you will be left feeling empty again, trying to buy the next shinny thing that can fill that void.

It is hard to feel satisfied in general. When we see something new, we feel like we need to have it immediately. So, we open our wallets and sometimes spend money that we don’t have, just so we can get our hands on this thing that promises to make our life better, more fulfilling, more productive, etc. The item arrives promptly at our doorstep. We excitedly open the box and start playing with the new item until we get bored. So, we go back on our phone to look for another thing to buy and so on and so forth. In the end we are left with a plethora of things that we only used once, maybe twice. So, we buy bigger houses to put all the things that we bought. When things don’t fit in our houses, it is time to get a storage space. Just think about this, at one point in time, all that stuff used to be money.

Contentment helps with feeling like you have enough. You don’t need another purse, another car, another gadget, another you name it to be happy. When you are content, you feel satisfied with your life. You will never have enough until you decide that you have enough. Also, if you are buying things you don’t need with money you don’t have, you might find yourself imprisoned in a life that will cost you your peace and maybe even your health if your stress gets too high. Sometimes we buy things to escape our life. It is a good idea to become more aware of what is causing the unhappiness in your life. If you have trouble doing this, there are trained professionals that can help you uncover the real reasons for feeling like it is never enough.  Life is more than having stuff…
